21. Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This
A Solitary Seagull | Cape Town, South Africa
“Your life is your life. Don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
Be on the watch. There are ways out. There is light somewhere.
It may not be much light but it beats the darkness.
Be on the watch. The gods will offer you chances.
Know them.
Take them.
You can’t beat death but you can beat death in life, sometimes.
And the more often you learn to do it, the more light there will be.
Your life is your life.
Know it while you have it.
You are marvelous.
The gods wait to delight in you.”
— Charles Bukowski
Here’s five wonderful things I found on the internet this week.
1. Letters of Note
E.B. White’s beautiful letter to a man who had lost faith in humanity.
Dear Mr. Nadeau:
As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one compassionate woman, the contagion may spread and the scene is not desolate. Hope is the thing that is left to us, in a bad time. I shall get up Sunday morning and wind the clock, as a contribution to order and steadfastness.
…
Hang on to your hat. Hang on to your hope. And wind the clock, for tomorrow is another day.
Sincerely,
E. B. White
2. My Octopus Teacher
Stop whatever you are doing, grab an enormous box of tissues and watch this exquisite documentary.
3. Wear a Damn Mask
4. The breads of happiness
Everyone and their aunty became a sourdough aficionado in lockdown, Linda just made hers art.
Behold — the breads of happiness.
Linda’s own sourdough recipe is at the end of this short interview.
5. On architecture
RIP Gawie Fagan, one of South Africa’s most celebrated architects.
Gawie and his wife Gwen, who was also his creative partner, was known for his seamless integration of built structures into the surrounding natural environment.
Gawie & Gwen Fagan.
See you next Sunday.
