Sawubona friends,
It’s another beautiful Sunday, I hope this email finds you in a state of acceptance that this email isn’t exactly important in the cosmic scheme of things.
Here’s five things you may find interesting and/or meaningful.
1. Reading 🤩
I forget exactly how Deborah Levy and her beautiful books found their way into my life but I do know that four books in, I caught a small reference to Amanzimtoti that only a South African could know. I realised that she, like me, was born in South Africa and had moved to the UK and so since then I have found parts of myself in all her books.
“Real Estate makes the existential case for a female character who takes ownership of the deeds of her own life. And it accounts for the enduring relationships - with friends, lovers, family and literary forebears - that travel with us wherever we live, as well as those we must outgrow and leave behind.”
2. Lighting
This gorgeous table lamp by Flos.
I have her in yellow in my home.
3. Loving ❤️
Nkuli Mlangeni-Berg was born in South Africa and now lives in Sweden where she runs her textile design studio The Nineties.
“Mlangeni-Berg has enlisted female artisans in remote areas in South Africa who weave her made-to-order rugs using lush, local mohair.
In South Africa a lot of indigenous craft is dying out because people are so obsessed with everything being produced at a fast pace. I’m trying to bring awareness to it and make more people excited about passing these skills on to the next generation.”
4. South African Art
So glad I found Yolanda Mazwana.
5. Watching 👀
Not the same river. Not the same man.
See you next Sunday.
